Pixelated Living

Competition NY, NY 2006

In our proposal for Pier 40, a new economic model was invented for the private sector to invest in public spaces. This is enabled by adding a layer of private housing in exchange for urban structure recycling. For the private housing layer, we proposed an alternative to the traditional home in favor of a dense field of pixelated units. The storage containers’ circulation system allows the empty containers to transform and function as bridges between the units, thus creating temporary home extensions.
